Private Blind Tasting Yields Outstanding Northern Rhone

Several years ago, a small group of wine enthusiasts on L.A.’s Westside got together to taste some of their top wines from their personal cellars.  Today, they still meet once a month and conduct a blind tasting of a specific vintage or varietal at a local restaurant.  The club does not have a name – it’s just a group of friends who share a passion for wine.

Recently, the tasting featured Northern Rhone red wine from 2006 and earlier.  The bottles were each delivered to the sommelier of Campanile Restaurant, decanted and numbered for pouring into the eight glasses on the table.  As the tasting began, it was evident that a couple of the wines stood out – could they be from the prized 2003 vintage or perhaps something older?  The lunch courses were carefully paired for the reds from Hermitage, Cornas, St. Péray, St. Joseph, and Côte-Rôtie.

After the wines were fully evaluated and discussed, the winner was announced … surprise! - a 2006 Côte-Rôtie from Domaine Jean-Michel Stephan Côteaux de Tupin.  It displayed a deep purple color, aromas of chocolate, candied fruit, smoky bacon, and soft leather.  It was clean and elegant on the palate with nice spiciness.  The wine was well structured with silky tannins and a nice balance.  The finish was long and smooth with black fruit, liquorice, mint and spices lingering. The average rating was 90.4 with an average U.S. retail price of $86.00.

All agreed that they would love the opportunity to enjoy the wine in a few years as it further develops.  It should cellar nicely for another 20-25 years.

I was honored to participate in the tasting.
